The same sentence, three ways. On GPT-4o’s tokenizer Bangla script needs about 1.4× the tokens of English, and Banglish (Bangla in Latin letters) about 1.6×. More tokens means a higher API bill and slower answers. Count your own text: https://computebd.com/tools/bangla-token-counter/The measured numbers
| Sample | English | Banglish | Bangla |
|---|---|---|---|
| Customer support | 30 / 30 | 47 / 51 | 41 / 164 |
| News | 26 / 26 | 48 / 54 | 38 / 164 |
| Farming advice | 32 / 32 | 49 / 54 | 42 / 166 |
Each cell: tokens with GPT-4o’s tokenizer (o200k) / GPT-4’s (cl100k).
How to read it: the samples are short, everyday messages we wrote ourselves (a delivery update, a news line, farming advice), with the Banglish version written the way people type in chats. Costs on the cards assume an illustrative $1 per million tokens, ৳124 per dollar and 10,000 messages; real prices differ by provider and by input and output. Other models (Llama, Qwen, Gemini, Claude) use different tokenizers, so their counts differ — paste your own text into the counter to see yours.
